A blocked ear can be uncomfortable and worrying. While many people assume ear wax is always the cause, that’s not necessarily the case. Several common conditions can make your ears feel blocked even when very little or no ear wax is present.
If your ears feel full, your hearing seems muffled, or you notice popping or crackling sounds, there may be another explanation.

Common causes of blocked ears without wax
One of the most common causes is a problem with the Eustachian tube. This small tube connects the middle ear to the back of the nose and helps equalise pressure. Following a cold, allergies or sinus congestion, it may not work properly, leaving your ear feeling blocked.
Changes in air pressure, such as during flying, driving through hills or even after swimming, can also create a temporary sensation of fullness.
Some people experience ear symptoms because of jaw tension (TMJ), neck muscle tightness or inflammation around the ear, even though the ear itself is healthy.
In other cases, fluid behind the eardrum, rather than ear wax, may be responsible for reduced hearing or a feeling of pressure.
Should I use ear drops?
Many people automatically reach for olive oil or ear drops. However, if ear wax isn’t the cause, these products are unlikely to improve your symptoms and, in some cases, may make examination more difficult.
A professional ear examination can quickly determine whether ear wax is present or whether another cause is more likely.
When should you seek advice?
It is sensible to arrange an assessment if:
- Your symptoms last more than a few days.
- One ear is noticeably worse than the other.
- Your hearing has become reduced.
- You have pain, dizziness or discharge from the ear.
- Ear drops have not helped.
